WIP Wednesday IV

Oops, so I missed Wednesday, hope you don’t mind a catch up on Sunday evening! I’ve been working on the Shalom Cardigan for Erika for Christmas.

The biggest ball of yarn I’ve ever worked with!

Oh noes! WHAT IS THAT?!

So, off the needles it went and I pulled out the whole thing. Yep. Started again from scratch. Arg. But I would feel bad giving Erika a demented sweater. So, I suppose it was a good thing that I had only gotten through the yoke of the sweater and not gotten any farther down the body of it. So now we’re back to stage 1. Ok, actually I’ve done 3 rows, so maybe we are at stage 2.

Such is life when knitting.

But Thanksgiving was amaaazing.

Ezra was enchanted by the Christmas Tree

I got some good smiles and giggles

and Ez got to watch football with Uncle Paul.

So pictures of Ezra’s sweater while he’s wearing it are still forthcoming. We kind of forgot/kept putting off getting a photoshoot and now I am back in Moscow and he’s in Tacoma and such is life. But here is what the sweater looks like while laying on my floor:

So that should sedate you until I talk Erika into sending me a picture of Ez wearing it.

Now, it’s time to unpack and tidy up.

Productive Saturday

Dishes are done, bed is made, cactus is repotted, house is clean and also I got this nice little shelf up! It was a dingy white color, I painted it green and hung it up this afternoon!

The Dead Cactus

Remember that cactus I was telling you about? The one I thought might be dead?

oct 003

Heh. I guess we’re not wondering anymore. It’s poor little head rolled right off the other day when it got bumped.

oct 004

However, this morning at the Farmer’s Market there was a nice lady in crazy pants selling Christmas Cacti. Apparently it will soon bloom pink and white blossoms.

oct 006

So we’ll try not to kill it.

September has been grand.

Many apologies for not updating lately. We’re going through a move at work and more my spare time has been devoted to that. BUT we are done as of this afternoon and I am exhausted. Lots of heavy lifting (hundreds and hundreds of patient charts), smashed fingers (In the U-Haul door. ouch.), my hands are covered in cuts (And then dipped in Pine-Sol to make sure we left the old office bright and shining) an aching back and sore muscles. But the good news is, we are all moved into our beaaaauuutiful new office and I have my very own space. It’s lovely.

Anyhow, we did one of our whirlwind trips to Tacoma last weekend, and got to go to the fair with some of my bestest friends, and got to show Paul how awesome the Puyallup Fair really is! I didn’t take my camera because I was with lots of people who took theirs, and also because I have about 10,000 pictures of the Fair. We got to see Ezra baptized, went to lunch with the WHOLE fam (First time we’ve all been together since Christmas!) got an orthodontist appointment (Today is the first day of eating solid foods again!) and got to spend some quality time with my sweet lil’ neph! Just take a look- what a sweetie.

september 050

Oh, are you talking to me?

september 057

Um, that’s a yawn, not a scream. Just FYI.

But before we left Paul and I went to the Latah County Fair and we had a blast.

september 004
Paul liked the Lego’s best.

september 009
Lest you forget this is Idaho.

september 013Paul is surprised by tall sunflowers and large pumpkins.

september 016We ate elephant ears and listened to bluegrass.

september 017We thought this sign was funny.

september 018We rode the Ferris Wheel and then ate snowcones.

All in all it was pretty good for a small fair. We made the most out of it and had a good time. Anyhow, so there is an update or sorts. I should get around to cleaning the house and tidying up. With working late all week my poor house has been a bit neglected, but that’s what weekends are for, right?

Spaghetti Sauce

I had so many tomatoes that I didn’t know what to do with, so I thought I would make some spaghetti sauce.

Saturday 001

First I browned some garlic in olive oil.

Saturday 002

Then washed and sliced my tomatoes

Saturday 003
Picked the LAST of my basil from my garden, mix it in with the garlic on a low heat.

Saturday 006
Quarter and peel the tomatoes.

Saturday 007
Add the tomatoes to the garlic and basil, crank up the heat

Saturday 008

Mash with the back of a slotted spoon (I actually used my potato masher, which worked a lot faster) heat until comes to a boil. At this point it was a little thinner than I’d like, so I added a small can of tomato paste, which helped it thicken up. I also added about two tablespoons of course ground kosher salt to taste and some dried Oregano. Simmer for a few hours. This also freezes really well, so I put it into Heavy Duty Ziplocs and put it in the freezer to enjoy later!

Saturday 009

And hey, Paul and I were in the paper this morning!

Quilt…ish

So I am going try my hand at quilting. I tried to make a quilt once in junior high and just got as far as stitching all of the top together, let’s just say that cutting straight lines isn’t my strong point. Or following patterns for that matter. Yeah, well, we all know I am not a perfectionista. Anyhow.. that’s beside the point! The point is that I found a bunch of fabric at a Rummage Sale 2 weeks ago and grabbed it (It was an “all-you-can-stuff-into-this-bag” donation type sale, so I figured even if I didn’t use it for a while, no big deal. I then suplimented it with a little bit that I had stashed away, and 2 old sheets from the Salvation Army that had cute little flowers on them.

Look, mom! Straight lines! I took special care to make them the same size (roughly…eh hem, I don’t have the best scissors.)
quilty veg 007

So now I just have to find a place that I can put my sewing machine. Woe is me, my apartment has no more space left in it. And husband needs both of the desks for school and work. Hmph. Oh well. I’ll figure out something.

Other than that, Paul and I took a trip out to our friend Alberta’s farm and came back with some deliiiiiicious veggies, which we have been eating every night for dinner (Our favorite thing so far: Frying zucchini in olive oil until browned, then right before taking off the heat adding a dash of garlic salt! Super yum)

And I am SO glad that we stocked up on blueberries for the fall. We’ve REALLY been enjoying our blueberries.

quilty veg 005

Does anyone have any idea for the proper care of Cactus Plants? I haven’t been able to find much online, and I am afraid that our little buddy is dying. We’ve been trying not to overwater him, but I am afraid of underwater!

quilty veg 010

Well, that’s all I got for this lovely (hot, again) Friday here in good ol’ Idaho. Tomorrow we hit up the Farmer’s Market, The Fall Jolly (think Rummage Sale/Craft Fair/Food Vendors all in one spot!) a football game with good friends, and it’ll be a great weekend.

Veggies and Waffles

waffles 003
While on our quest at the Farmer’s Market to get berries for our Saturday Morning breakfast, we stopped to get some cucumbers, but our friend working at the booth decided to cut us a deal and throw in some squash and some kohlrabi. Now I’ve never had kohlrabi (the spiky purple thing) and so if any of you have any great kohlrabi recipes, please, by all means share them with me!

waffles 005
We also got some fresh peppers, just look at those colors! I love our Farmers Market, delicious produce, SO cheap!

waffles 006
Mmmm, Fresh fruit for the Belgian Waffles.

waffles 001Waffles are serious business.

waffles 008
The perfect Saturday morning treat!

Etc, etc.

This weekend we hit up the Farmers Market (quickly) but we got some fresh blueberries and mini-donuts for breakfast (shh, don’t tell) and then we headed down to the Lentil Fest!

Lentil Fest 061

So Lentil Fest wasn’t all that exciting, but c’mon, there was a parade and everything. It was kind of fun, and I got to hang out with Paul all day so that was fun, too. Then we went and saw Julie and Julia, which we loved.

Meryl Streep was, of course, amazing. She really is quite a character.

In her honor, I fried up some onions in lots of butter tonight. A warning though, don’t go see the movie if you are hungry, lots of yummy food shots! Makes me want to learn how to cook French food!

The weather has calmed down to mid-80s lately, which is loads more pleasant than the extreme heat of earlier this August. I am missing my Tacoma people more than ever. Especially this little dude:

Ezra 086

But! We will be home in less than a month. Also, we will get to hit up the fair! Always the highlight of my year.

I am loving that I can walk to work, be within walking distance of pretty much anything that I need (except the grocery store, but who wants to carry all those groceries back anyhow?)

I’ve been looking up some stuff online for ways to keep our apartment a little more organized (We have a lot of stuff!) Anyway, I’ve come across some pretty fun stuff, and even though it wouldn’t really work in this apartment, I still think it’s kind of cool:

But my shoes would never stay so organized.

Well, that’s all I got for now!

An Ode To My Lens Cap

As many of you know, I don’t travel far without my camera. It follows me around everywhere. And when I don’t have a camera in my hands, I like to pretend I do; hence this look: (Thanks, Derek.)
Dana's Birthday 181

Ok, ok, moving on. So, flash forward to Paris (I know, right?) We’re standing underneath the Eiffel Tower, and this is the last moment I remember having my lens cap:
Europe 2009 444
After that… gone. No clue where, just not anywhere on me, or in any of my bags, or pockets, or anywhere else as far as I can see. I figure I probably dropped it and it rolled away. I am a little bummed, but heck, I’m in Paris. Oh well.

So, we go along our merry way and we’re here: (That’s Bruges, by the way)
Europe 2009 792

We’re in our hostel and what should fall out of one of Autumn’s bags but my lens cap! Having been reunited with my lens cap I was full of joy.

We continue on our trip… enter Brussels.
Europe 2009 1048
I swear I checked my bag at least 4 times, no lens cap. The next day in the airport, going through security, look who decided to show up… yep, my lens cap.

My lens cap has stayed put for a while now, well, until last week during a trip to our local Frisko Freeze.

charissa 007
It went AWOL. Ben borrowed my camera, he swears he handed me the lens cap, I had no such memory of the event (not that unusual, though).

Today, on my lunch break, I was out in my car, and look who rolled out from underneath my seat.lens cap
Dear Lens Cap, I know you will never leave me. You may stray temporarily, but I know you will always come back to me, because you love me.
Always, Ali.
