Samuel, my very tiny boy.

We went in for Samuel’s six month check up on Friday, and the doctor had some concerns about his weight gain, or lack thereof. When Sam was born he was smack-dab in the middle- 50th percentile at seven and a half pounds. He did fine the first few months, even though we had a lot of struggles with breastfeeding, but kept steadily declining on the growth charts. I know that a lot of people don’t put a whole lot of trust in the growth charts, and I realize they are just ‘guidelines’, but Sam had almost completely stopped gaining weight (yet was still getting taller) so there was some reason for concern. He isn’t quite up to 15 lbs, which puts him officially off the charts in terms of weight, and he is just over 26 inches, somewhere in the 30th percentile for height.

So, the doctor wants us to try to get as many calories into Sam as possible, so on top of increasing the amount of nursing sessions a day we are going to do 3 ‘solid’ meals a day. Sam loves to eat, so it’s no problem for us, but trying to figure out higher calorie foods for him to eat is a bit harder than I thought. Avacado’s aren’t in season right now, and the ones I found were kind of nasty looking, but upon some suggestions from other mama’s I am adding coconut oil to his sweet potatoes and carrots. It’s really high in calories and very mild tasting.

But other than his apparent lack of being able to gain weight, Sam is ahead on almost all of his milestones! He is rolling both ways, sitting unassisted and can crawl by doing “The Worm” it’s hilarious- he pushes himself up onto his arms (like a pushup) and then fill launch off and arch his back and flop himself forward. It’s entertaining to watch! He is grabbing and pinching and loves to give open mouth kisses on my cheeks. He also loves blowing raspberries. Yesterday the weather was fantastic, so we went on a really long walk around town and Sam got to try out the swings for the first time. He was in heaven! He absolutely loved it and wouldn’t stop smiling and giggling. I wish I had thought ahead enough to bring my camera with me! He’s also finally sprouting a little bit of hair on top of his head! It’s still pretty blond, so it’s hard to see in pictures, but it’s there alright!

And starting today we’re babysitting another little girl 3 days a week while her mama is in class at U of I, and I am hoping that it goes well, Sam is a bit of a social baby, so I am hoping that he is good while she’s here. Maybe she can teach him some new tricks, too, since she is 3 months older.

If anyone has any tips for fattening up a lil’ baby, feel free to leave your suggestions in the comments!

PinkyPomPoms.

Poor kid always has to model the girly stuff, too.

He doesn’t mind too much if he gets to play with pieces of paper. They’re pretty much his favorite thing ever.

If I turn my back for one second it’s in his mouth being chewed.

And then he makes this sad face when you take it away. “Why would you do this to me, mama?”

But he’s happy again once I give it back!

So, we have Samuel’s 6 month well-child visit today, meaning the dreaded shots. I am really not looking forward to it, but I’ll be relieved that they’re done. The last set of shots Sam got weren’t terrible, he was just a bit grouchy and had a little trouble staying asleep, but hopefully he’ll handle these well. I’m a bit concerned with his weight gain (or lack-thereof) I know he’s not malnourished or anything (have you SEEN those thighs?!) but he is still under 15 lbs, which is on the very small side for a 6 1/2 monther. I’m also curious to ask the doctor about his frenulum as it still pulses very strongly and you can see it moving from across the room and I don’t know if that’s normal or not. I know he’s hitting all of his 6 month milestones and he’s doing great with solids, but it’s always good to get the all-clear from the doctor, too. Happy Friday!

Double Pompom!

I made a double pompom baby hat for a baby shower I went to on Monday night.

We can’t wait to meet you, Baby Aaron!

I ended up staying at the baby shower 2 hours after it ended, hanging out with some really great girls and eating a lot of cookies and cream puffs. Oops. 🙂

Bubble Baths and Building Blocks

So, if you are Facebook friends with me you’ve probably already seen these, but I thought they were too cute not to share.

I told him to wash some dishes while he was at it.

Also, thanks for your tips about helping Sam to take a bottle, I’ll definitely be trying some of those out!

We’ve been having a fun time today with our building blocks that came from Nana.

And now we are off to read (i.e. try to eat the pages) some books, knock down some building block towers and roughhouse a little on the floor.

Pink Stegosaurus

Another custom order for a Stegosaurus hat, only this one is toddler sized and a little girly. But that’s ok- Sam doesn’t mind.

Also, does anyone have any tips for getting him to take a bottle or a sippy cup? We’ve tried letting him do it himself, we’ve tried warming it up, cooling it down, trying faster flow nipples, trying different bottles, trying pumped breastmilk, water, etc. We’ve had other people try to give it to him (while we weren’t home), tried Paul giving it to him, etc.He used to take a bottle just fine, but has recently decided (as of early February) that he is no longer interested. He’ll play with the sippy cup, but won’t actually drink out of it. It’s not a huge deal, but seeing as though he still needs to eat every few hours that means I don’t really ever get to leave his side for more than 3 hours at a time. And mama needs a break every once in a while!

Month 6

Time for Samuel’s monthly pictures!
Here’s a link to Month 1, and Month 2Month 3Month 4 and Month 5 in case you missed them! And  here is a link to a page that I’ll be updating every month with all of the pictures together, so you can see them side by side!

So, Samuel’s six month birthday was a few weeks ago, but I hadn’t gotten around to editing his monthly pictures until yesterday. Whoops! But he is doing great. He’s still on the small side, clocking in at 24 inches tall, weighing 14.5 pounds, putting him beneath the 5th percentile for height and weight. He is eating solids like a champ, loves sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, applesauce, and oatmeal.

His colic seems to have subsided, and he’s a much happier boy, but when he is tired all bets are off and he turns into kind of a whiner. He melts down pretty easily. We’re working on getting longer naps. Currently he will only stay asleep for about 45 minutes at a stretch during the day, so he takes about 5-6 naps a day. It makes it a bit hard to be out and about, since he constantly is getting up and going down from naps. But nighttime sleep is getting better. He will typically sleep from 7:00pm-12:00 or 1:00am until he wakes up to eat again, and then usually is up again around 3:30 or so, then will sleep until 7:00am. We’re hoping now that he’s eating more during the day he will sleep longer at night.

He is the funniest little ham, he will turn very cheesy if he knows the camera is out. He’s also very ticklish, and always has a smile for people who stop to talk to him. Happy six month birthday, Samuel David!

Easter Bunny Hat

Another Easter Bunny hat!

My little baby looks so grown up when wearing jeans and striped shirts. I love this kid.

He is getting such a funny personality. (Speaking of Sam, I haven’t forgotten about Sam’s 6 month pictures…I just haven’t edited the pictures yet! They’re coming this week, I swear!)

And then that gummy, hilarious smile you guys got to see a few days ago:

Cheesy Smile and Happy Friday.

Happy Friday! So, I asked Sam to smile for me, when I was taking his picture and this is the face he makes. I’m still dying laughing!

But he’s going through a major growth spurt right now, so he’s been a little more needy than usual. But it’s time for his breakfast, now. Hope you all have a great weekend, it’s the start of Spring Break around here, which means campus will be empty!

Monkey Moo.

A custom order for a monkey. He’s pretty cute, but somehow he ended up with sort of a hunchback.

Eh. Oh well, he’s still a fun little guy.

And check out some pruny baby toes after a long bath! Man, I just love baby feet.

Well, we are off to our Co-op Mama’s and Papa’s meeting so Sam can hang out with his other baby buddies and mama can get some social interaction!
