So if you have been wanting to make yourself another Knittybutton Hat, here is the pattern for the Gray Tides Slouchy Hat. I’m very excited about this!
Size 7 Double Pointed Needles
1 Skein of medium-worsted weight yarn (I used 1 skein of Vanna’s Choice, I believe the color was “charcoal” and I used up the ENTIRE skein, so if you make your hat a bit slouchier or bigger you may need a bit more than one skein, Vanna’s choice is about 170 yards per skein.)
Cast on 80 stitches, join in the round.
Row 1: *Knit 1, Purl 1* Rep to end
Rows 2-10: Repeat this row 9 more times. (This is a very easily customizable hat, also, so if you want a longer brim or shorter just add or subtract a few rows!)
Row 11: *Knit 4, Make 1*Rep to end. (I don’t think that this works out perfectly for 80 stitches, I think I was left over with 2 stitches if I remember correctly, I just added one more stitch at the very end)
Row 12: Knit all the way around.
Row 13: Knit all the way around
Row 14: K2T all the way around
Row 15: *K1, Yarn Over 1* rep to end.
Repeat rows 12 through 15 until your hat is as slouchy as you want it. Once you start the decreases it will start to decrease pretty quickly, so make sure your have it as long as you want it to be before you start doing the decreases. The person I made this hat for wanted it pretty slouchy so she could fit all of her hair upside of the hat, so I made it probably about 9 inches long before I started doing my decreases.
*Important Note! All of your decrease rows will be on the “Row 12” of the 4 rows that you repeat, so it will be every 4th row! Rows 13-15 will be the same that you’ve been doing the whole time. *
Decrease Row 1: *Knit 8, K2T,* Rep to end (I don’t think that this works out perfectly for the amount of stitches that you end up having, but just knit the last two stitches together.)
Decrease Row 2: *Knit 7, K2T* Rep to end
Decrease Row 3: *Knit 6, K2T* Rep to end
Decrease Row 4: *Knit 5, K2T* Rep to end
Decrease Row 5: *Knit 4, K2T* Rep to end
Decrease Row 6: *Knit 3, K2T* Rep to end
Decrease Row 7: *Knit 2, K2T* Rep to end
Decrease Row 8: *Knit 1, K2T* Rep to end
Decrease Row 9: *K2T* Rep to end.
Then any stitches you have leftover just thread your yarn through and tighten and make a knot! Weave in your ends and Voila! You’ve got yourself a new hat!
*Alternate decrease method: If you want it to be a bit less of a gradual decrease and a bit more “bunched up” at the top, which makes it look a bit more slouchy you can just start your decreases on “Decrease Row 6” and then for the last few rows just K2T!*
Ok, now here is the part where I ask you for a favor. If you do end up making this pattern, would you pretty, pretty please let me know if you find any mistakes or unclear instructions? I haven’t had anyone test this pattern, so I am not sure if maybe somethings are worded weirdly that maybe only I can understand. So please feel free to leave feedback and let me know if you have any questions!
Edit: My huge apologies. I realize that instead of saying “yarn over” to make a stitch I accidentally put “Make 1″, which wouldn’t give you the texture that the Grey Tides hat has. I am so sorry!
